ABOUT
000 2025-08 Mpho Matsipa & Bongisa Msutu umcimbi biography - umcimbi is a collective, a network, a convening, an incubator, a platform, and a think tank of Black femmes and non-binary spatial agents, designers, makers, thinkers, and practitioners. Working across the built environment and cultural spheres throughout Africa and the global African Diaspora, we draw from a wide range of spatial, visual, and cultural disciplines. We convene through intergenerational gatherings that center radical ecologies, collective knowledge production, and world-building rooted in justice, reciprocal care, community, and place. These knowledges—always in conversation with our wholeness and continuity (Ubuntu)—take many forms. To space for the untranslatable, we center the margins, the community, and the protocols around who holds the right to speak, design, and imagine new worlds—particularly within a context where only 4% of licensed architects in South Africa are Black or POC women.
A NOTE ON CITATION AS FEMINIST PRACTICE
000 2025-08 Mpho Matsipa, Miliswa Ndziba & Kutlwano Ramphele umcimbi framework - Our framework for navigating space finds root in citations. Seeing the importance of a recognised memory of place, recognising the spaces we inhabit are not neutral. Our citation practice comes as active intervention into this terrain. Citation here becomes a form of radical acknowledgement, with the contributions of those who have stepped the same paths.[Ahmed, 2017] Citation is a practice of building lineage and legacy, as an orientation, as a memory and as a knowing. It is a foundation for future makers, weaving together diverse voices into a shared resource that reflects our collective consciousness. By citing what we say and do, we create an archive of knowledge that brings visibility to the voices we hear. By doing this, we challenge hegemonic frameworks that have historically dominated the environments and spheres we inhabit.
